J6-M CENTRIFUGE

BEFORE USE:

1. New user MUST be trained by the captain or present users

2. ALWAYS add info in logbook.

HOW TO OPERATE:

1) Low speed, high volume centrifuges are important for everyone. Please reserve or sign up on the centrifuge sign-up pages posted outside B430. If you don’t sign, we can not find you if there is a problem and your samples could be discarded.

2) Be sure to balance your samples on the double-pan balance on the counter.

3) Never exceed 4.2K r.p.m.

4) Stand by the centrifuge until it reaches speed. If you have failed to obtain proper balance the centrifuge will emit terrible sounds and will attempt to walk around. There is an automatic out-of-balance shut-off but please do not test it.

5) Remove samples promptly. 1) It allows other users access and 2) Temperature control tends to overshoot which can freeze samples.

6) Wipe out bucket interiors after removing samples to prevent corrosion. Check for spillage within rotor – clean if necessary.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

If centrifuge fails to start it could be a serious problem. Leave note on machine and contact captain and/or Jessica (note or e-mail Jessica.Metzger@stanford.edu)

This instrument is on a service contract and will be fixed as soon as possible but only if you report the problem.
