THEORY OF GRAMMAR [ENG05GX01]

Course Outline

UNIT 1 (20 hrs.)
Some new grammar terminology- Word class, Syntax, Phonology, Morphology, Immediate Constituents, Descriptive and Prescriptive Grammar, Knowledge of Language- Chomsky’s Concept, I- and E- approaches to language, Head Parameter, Projection Principle, Rewrite Rules, Strict Binary Branching Condition

UNIT 2 (15 hrs.)
Phrase Structure: X-bar theory, NP and VP
Functions in the Sentence: Thematic roles and Thematic structure

UNIT 3 (15 hrs.)
The Structure of the different phrases: PP, AP, AdvP

UNIT 4 (10 hrs.)
Basic sentence structure:
Tenses: Simple Past, Simple Present and Simple Future; Aspect: Continuous and Perfective, Participle forms; Modality: Will, shall, can, may, must (and their past tense forms)
Sentence types: Simple, complex and compound
Finite Clauses: Embedded and Coordinated

Practical exercises:
Homework, class assignments, presentations and problem sheets
