Methods

Gel Synthesis

  1. Make zein protein films.
    1. Mix 1 g of zein with 9 mL of ethanol or DMF and ~1 mL of glycerol.
    2. Heat in oven in a Petri dish at 37oC for the weekend.
  2. Make a polyethylene glycol gel.
    1. Mix 2.0 g of polyethylene glycol with 10 mL of water.
    2. Heat in oven in a Petri dish at 37oC for the weekend.
  3. Make a polymethyl methacrylate gel.
    1. Mix 0.996 g of polymethyl methacrylate with 20 mL of water.
    2. Heat in oven in a Petri dish at 37oC for the weekend.

PPF-18 and PPF-20 Synthesis

  1. Synthesize PPF-18.
    1. Mix 7.9 mg of TCPP, 8.9 mg of Zn(NO3)2•H2O, 4.2 mg of DPNI, and 50 μL of 1.0 M acidic ethanol.
    2. Add 1.5 mL of DEF and 0.5 mL ethanol.
    3. Sonicate to mix.
    4. Add < 1 mg of PPF-18 crystals to seed.
    5. Heat in oven at 80oC over the weekend.
  2. Synthesize PPF-20.
    1. Mix 7.9 mg of TCPP, 8.9 mg of Zn(NO3)2•H2O, 16.8 mg of DPNI, and 30 μL of 1.0 M acidic ethanol.
    2. Add 1.5 mL of DMF and 0.5 mL ethanol.
    3. Sonicate to mix.
    4. Add < 1 mg of PPF-20 crystals to seed.
    5. Heat in oven at 80oC over the weekend.
