Setup and Equipment

The equipment was already set up in the senior lab and set up consisted of turning everything on. Equipment used in this lab was a computer that is connected to an NaI detector.

More details needed here for reproducibility, especially since the old lab manual refers to different equipment.

The procedure for this lab was very simple.

  • Turn on the equipment and wait for it to warm up
  • Open the computer program used to count events from the detector
  • set initial parameters
  • take a measurement
  • modify the parameters
  • take another measurement
  • repeat

Results

The analysis of the data shows that the standard deviation and the square root of the mean are very close meaning that this data is probably Poisson distributed. This conclusion is also supported by the graphs of the frequency of the actual data and the frequency predicted by the Poisson model.
