Objective

Description

Synthesizing PVOH

-0.5 g of polvinyl alcohol (MW:22000) was placed in to beaker 1. 3 ml of water was added to the beaker.
-1 g of PVOH (MW:22000) was placed in to beaker 2. 6 ml of water was added to the beaker.
-0.5 g of PVOH (MW:100000) was placed in to beaker 3. 5 ml of water was added to the beaker.
-1g of PVOH (MW:100000) was placed. in to beaker 4. 7 ml of water was added to the beaker.
-All four beakers were placed on to the hot plate for 15 minutes until the solutions become clear.
-Each solution was then poured in to separate teflon plates and let it dry under the hood.

Note: The PVOH in beaker 2 3 and 4 did not fully dissolved. Some stayed at the bottom of the beaker.

Data

  • Films with higher molecular mass(100,000) were thicker than the films with smaller molecular mass(22,000).
  • It was very hard to fully dissolve the PVOH with higher molecular mass.
