Objective

The purpose of the present experiment was to further determine the effect of salt on gold nanoparticle synthesis and "brain formation".

Description

The test tubes were maintained in an 85 degree heat bath for 2.5 hours. A 166:1 ratio of gold to BSA was used for all solutions.

Test tube 1

  • glass test tube
  • .1 ml (1 M) NaCl = 1 mM concentration
  • 1 ml 17.7 µM BSA + 2.34 ml 2.9 mM Au + 6.65 ml water

Test tube 2

  • glass test tube
  • 1 µl(1 M) NaCl = 10 µM concentration
  • 1 ml 17.7 µM BSA + 2.34 ml 2.9 mM Au + 6.659 ml water

Test tube 3

  • plastic test tube
  • .5 ml of .1 ml (1 M) NaCl solution = 1 mM concentration
  • 1 ml 17.7 µM BSA + 2.34 ml 2.9 mM Au + 6.65 ml water

Test tube 4

  • plastic test tube
  • .5 ml of 1 µl(1 M) NaCl solution = 10 µM concentration
  • 1 ml 17.7 µM BSA + 2.34 ml 2.9 mM Au + 6.659 ml water

Data

  • test tube 1 = light yellow fibers
  • test tube 2 = small "brain" on surface with slight purple to it, but mostly yellow fibers throughout
  • test tube 3 = light purple fibers
  • test tube 4 = yellow fibers
